Your phone is smart and can connect to the infrastructure in multiple ways; messages can be sent over GSM, Wi-Fi, or 3G/4G/LTE/GPRS.

What’s the difference between these?

Text messages (SMS) travel over the GSM infrastructure (1). This is also used for regular calls, and is provided by your Telecom provider

Apps like Whatsapp, Signal, Wire, WeChat and iMessage travel over the internet:

When it comes to mobile phones, you can connect to the internet via Wifi (2) - say, when you are connected to the Wi-Fi connection at home or at work

Or via 3G/4G/LTE/GPRS (3). This second type of Wi-Fi connection is made via mobile phone towers, and it’s what your phone’s data plan is for.

Now that you have an idea about how your phone connects to the infrastructure, the question becomes: what is your phone actually communicating to the infrastructure? And then, what can someone who has access to the infrastructure know about you?

A member of the Green Party of Switzerland had similar questions; so he requested and then analysed six months of his phone data. Watch this 4-minute animation about the “Life of Balthasar Glättli” (it's without sound) to get a sense of what can be learned about a person's life just from his phone data.
