In Module 2, you looked at compartmentalisation (using different messaging apps for different purposes), setting disappearing messages, and changing default settings.

If you are working in a higher-risk environment, i.e. on a sensitive topic or high-profile case, or in a repressive environment, one security strategy is to create a pseudonymous messaging account - an account that is not tied to your real or online identity, and that can be used as a temporary messaging identity through which you communicate. Once your investigation is over, or after a period of time, you can choose to discard this identity.

Why pseudonymous, and not anonymous?
Your device and the internet infrastructure create metadata to deliver your messages. This metadata could be used to identify you, making it extremely hard to create and maintain a complete anonymous account. This is why people refer to it as a pseudonymous account.

So how do you create a pseudonymous account? We will focus here on Wire, which is a recommended secure messaging app that allows you to create an account using only an email address (i.e. no phone number is needed).

Pre-requisites:

You need to have a phone and/or laptop with access to Internet

You need to download the app (this applies whether you are using Wire for mobile or desktop, or both).

Creating a pseudonymous Wire account - what to keep in mind:

1. Do not link your new Wire account to an existing email address, and rather create a new pseudonymous email account.

Protonmail and Tutanota are email services that offer the option to create an email account without verification or payment, which allows for the creation of pseudonymous accounts. When setting up your email account, remember to choose a generic username that can’t be linked to you (e.g. Bob423 or GreenButterFly).

2. Choose also a generic username for your Wire account that can’t be linked to you (Bob423 or GreenButterFly).

Use your pseudonymous mail account to verify your identity.

3. See this pseudonymous Wire account as a temporary or throwaway identity, and use it with a small group of people.

If you use it to connect with all your friends, the metadata of these connections might reveal your identity. If you continue to use it for an extended period of time, there is a chance you might reveal your identity by mistake, or the metadata might reveal it.

4. Use the “disappearing message” function to ensure that messages automatically get deleted after a specified period of time.

5. Encourage your contacts who you want to communicate pseudonymously with to also set up a pseudonymous Wire account.

6. Once you stop using the account, delete any remaining messages and delete your account.
