Top tips for choosing between being yourself and being someone else?

Instagram offers a great space for investigation. Just be aware that the things you can find out about other people, they can also find out about you.

Are you using your real name? Is your account public? Are the accounts you follow visible? If you said "yes" to all three questions, any interested person can learn a lot about you and the kind of stories you might be working on. If you are working on hot stories you might want to set up multiple accounts using multiple different names to separate the research you are conducting.

However, if you add someone who has a private account from your new account and if they accept your request, then you are misleading them as they might not know that you want to gain access to their account for a news story. Consider this ethical dimension when you contemplate using the information you gather from this account and consider not publishing this information.

If you want to create a new account, follow these steps:

Create a new email address

Use this new email to create a new Instagram account

Create strong passwords for both your email address and your new Instagram account (find out how to do this in Totem’s Secure Passwords course)

Setting up your account

With a little bit of investigation, you determine that Sasha’s Instagram account is public with more than 1 million followers and he has been the subject of many news stories. You decide that it will not be a risky investigation for you and you will use your own Instagram account for this investigation rather than create a new one.
