Can you still picture life without the internet? In the last decade or so, the internet has cemented its place at the centre of many aspects of our lives: social communication, work, research, banking, shopping, storing photos and videos; we are heavily dependent on it.

But most of us never really question how the internet works - until, perhaps, something breaks down and information is lost, or we are prevented from accessing a website or account.

The internet is in fact a complex and diverse infrastructure; an infrastructure that allows you to connect to it in either a less secure or a more secure way. This all depends on the choices you make; the tools and services you use.

In order to make more secure choices, you don’t need to be a tech expert - but you do need to understand the fundamentals of how the internet works. This knowledge is your foundation - from here, you can become an informed internet user. Like crossing the street - you do not necessarily need to know how to drive a car, but you do need to know to look left and right before you cross.

In this course you will explore the infrastructure of the internet - how it works, who owns it, and how you can make informed choices depending on your own privacy and security needs.

You should walk away from this course understanding:

How the internet works, i.e. how your emails, messages, passwords, and so on are sent across the internet

Who has access to what data along the way

What key terms like encryption, HTTP, HTTPS and metadata mean, and why these things matter

What you can do to better control your privacy and make your internet browsing and communication more secure

Note: You will be learning a lot of new concepts. Don't hesitate to check the Glossary page at any point during the course.

If you're new to Totem here is some information to get you started. Even if you've used edX for other courses, the information here will help orient you to how this course is laid out.

Layout of the course

This course is laid out in Modules and Units. Each Module contains 1 or more Units that cover the material for that Module. The Module is the topic area and the Units has all the learning material you'll need to learn that topic. To navigate through the module's Units, use the navigation bar at the top of the Module. You can use the left and right arrows to move through each Unit. Hover over the unit with your mouse to see the unit title.

Each Unit will generally have some video content, reading material and problem sets, and a set of assessment questions to test your knowledge. When answering a problem set (eg. a quiz) or assessments questions, always click on the "Submit" button. To see the correct answer and a detailed explanation, don't forget to click on the "Show Answer" button.

Some Units also have a discussion board where you can post questions and other material so fellow students can provide feedback. The Units are meant to be taken in order but you can skip around if you already have mastered the material in a particular unit. In order to do well on the assessments, you should learn the material in all the Units.

Instructor feedback

Given the nature of this MOOC-style course, it's not possible for instructors to provide feedback to participants. However, we encourage you to seek help and feedback from other participants using the Discussion page. This is a great way to help each other out and enrich your learning experience.

Grading policy

This course is available in self-paced format. You can listen to the lecture, attempt the quizzes, and work on the exercises at anytime. In the quizzes, you have four attempts at each question.

The quizzes account for 100% of the total grade. The Image Mapped Input and Drag & Drop exercises are not graded. You must achieve an overall score of 70% to pass the course. You can check your progress on the Progress page, and when you have achieved a passing grade, you can click the Request Certificate button to request for your certificate.
