To understand how the internet impacts your privacy and digital security, you first need to understand that it is a physical infrastructure: a network of cables, servers and routers. Even the cloud - a nice marketing concept - is made up of physical networks, connected across the world.

In this course we focus on the internet infrastructure you access through your computer. Your mobile phone also connects to this infrastructure, but has other options for connection as well - you can explore this further in Totem’s Secure Messaging Apps course.

How does an email get from here to there? Below is a simplified representation of the internet. Hover over the different icons to see who and what are part of the infrastructure needed to send your email.

We’ll go deeper into what all these terms mean in the next few sections of the course.

Now let’s look at some of the elements of this diagram in more depth.

The internet is a complex network in which different actors - companies, organisations and individuals - offer different services.

Your computer connects to the Wi-Fi/Router; the Router in turn connects to the internet infrastructure. The Router is most commonly provided by an ISP (Internet Service Provider)

The ISP is your connection to the larger internet - without them you would not be able to do much. Before going anywhere else, all your internet traffic goes to the ISP that is connected to the Wifi/Router you’re using

The ISP then connects your traffic to the Internet Exchange Point (IXP) - this is your ISP’s connection to the larger internet

Why is all this important? From a privacy and security perspective, it is important to know that all these actors - in this case, mostly private or state-run companies, depending on where you are - have physical access to the information you are sending and receiving over the internet.

And no matter which website or service you connect to, all your information first goes through your ISP, which stores a copy of this information for a designated period of time (often this is required by law).

If the internet is a network of cables, servers and routers... who owns these things?

This question is actually two questions:

Who owns the hardware and software needed for you to send an email?

Who owns the cables that connect the different ISPs, IXPs and servers together?

To answer the first question, we’ll go back to our simplified diagram of the internet. In the diagram below, if you hover over each icon you will see who owns or operates each part of the infrastructure needed to send your email. Think about who these entities are in your own life. Who is your ISP at home or at work? A lot of the information you send across the internet passes through this company - including your emails.

Now let’s move on to our second question: Who owns the cables that connect the different parts of the internet together?

To answer this, we need to go back in history.

Take a few minutes to look through the first eight maps of the following collection of 40 maps explaining the internet, keeping in mind your question: Who owns the internet?

(Don’t forget to come back here when you’re done!)

What did you find out? Who owns the internet’s cables? As you explored the internet’s history, you probably came to the conclusion: no-one. Or at least, no-one owns the internet as a whole; different parts of it are owned and controlled by a mix of private and state-run companies and collectives.

So how do all the differently-owned parts work together? To ensure that your emails travel across the infrastructure smoothly, everyone involved has agreed to use the same language. These are called protocols, and we’ll get more into what these are and why they matter later in the course.

If the internet is so complex, with different owners and infrastructures, how does, say, your internet provider know where to deliver your email? How does a website load on your browser? In short, how does the internet know where you are?

The answer is, through an Internet Protocol Address (IP Address) - a unique string of numbers that looks something like this:

213.108.108.217

An IP Address is assigned to an individual Wifi/Router by the ISP (Internet Service Provider) that is connected to it.

Each time you connect to a website, the ISP sends your request to the servers of the website and sends back the information (i.e the website you see on your screen) to your IP Address. You can think of it like a phone number or physical address - each time you connect, the actors in the internet infrastructure look up the IP address to see where they have to send something to.

Let’s explore this further by looking at your IP address:

At the top of the page, you should be able to see your IP address.

Scroll down. Does your IP reveal your location?

You can copy/paste your latitude and longitude coordinates into a map (Open Street Maps, Google Maps or iMaps).

Apart from your IP address, a lot of other data is communicated to various owners of the infrastructure when you use the internet, including which websites you visit and at what times, and the specifics of the device you’re using. All of this is called metadata.

Your device has a unique, or near-unique, fingerprint
Taken in combination, the specifics of your device are often so unique that together they create a “fingerprint” that can be used to identify your specific device across many different websites.

Metadata can be used to create a detailed profile
The metadata of your device, IP address and software can be combined to create a unique profile about you, and your internet history can then be tied to this profile to put together a picture of who you are. Companies use this data for targeted advertising and political microtargeting; governments monitor it for suspicious behavior.
